How to Hack CURE (an example)

I've used CURE as my "house system" for about four years now. I've used it to explore everything from Harn to the Third Imperium. What follows is an example of how the core rules can be modified to suit a particular setting (in this case, Harn).

Harnic Magic and Miracles

These rules allow one to use Harnic magic in CURE with as little difficulty as possible.

Choosing Traits

In order to call upon the aid of magic or miracles in a game using these rules, a character needs to possess one of two traits:

• Priest of X

• Shek-Pvar

Priests can beseech assistance from X god, while a Shek-Pvar can all upon the forces of magic to aid them. A Shek-Pvar will need to choose a convocation, as outlined in the next section of the rules. A priest will need to choose which of the following deities they worship:

• Agrik (Disease, Fire, Pain & Torture. Soldiers, War)

• Halea (Contracts, Erotic Love, Merchants, Sensory Pleasure, Wealth)

• Ilvir (Caves & Pits, Craftsmen & Artists, Cycle of Life & Death, Ivashu, Fertility & Infertility)

• Larani (Chivalry, Justice, Knights & Ladies, Vengeance, War)

• Morgath (Death & Undeath, Despair, Madness, Primal Chaos, The Shadow of Bukrai)

• Naveh (Darkness, Deceit, Nightmares, Secrecy & Things Unseen, Sudden Death)

• Peoni (Farming, Fertility, Labor & Work, Physicians & Healing, True Love & Trothmaking)

• Sarajin (Battle, Ice & Snow, The Ljarl, The Sea, Wind)

• Save-K’nor (Art & Poetry, Books & Writing, Decision-making, Knowledge, The Concordat)

• Siem (Dreams, The Elder Peoples, Memory & Forgetfulness, The Sky, Wilderness)

Shek-Pvar Convocations

While a priest does not require any further traits to cast magic, a Shek-Pvar character must dedicate another of their traits to one of the following convocations:

• Fyvria of Earth, (death, decay, growth, life)

• Jmorvi of Metal (craft, form, function, shape)

• Lyahvi of Air (intangibility, scent, sight, sound)

• Odivshe of (cold, dark, quintessence, vivation)

• Peleahn of Fire (activity, heat, movement)

• Savorya of Spirit (emotion, meaning, thought, will)

Additionally, there exists “gray magic” – a kind of meta-magic that ties all of the Shek-Pvar convocations together, but it is mastered by so few that many consider it a lost art.

The Priest and Divine Intervention

Priests may call upon the deity that they worship to provide aid in times of need by making an action roll as normal. A deity may answer within the guidelines set forth in the Concordat. A priest’s player can spend a plot point to ensure that a deity responds to their petition, but that deity will still act within the bounds of the Concordat, as outlined in HarnMaster.

The Shek-Pvar and Casting Spells

A Shek-Pvar may attempt to cast any spell associated with their learned convocation as an action. Such a spell casting attempt is resolved as any other action using CURE. A Shek-Pvar’s player may spend PIPs to ensure the successful casting of spells prior to making a roll, or to mitigate disaster in the case of a failed spell casting roll.

Other Deities (Optional)

There exist hundreds of other, lesser-known, deities in the world of Harn. If a priest so chooses, they may worship a lesser-known deity. The details of such deities are to be worked out between the players and the referee. Such deities can still be petitioned for aid and PIPs can still be spent to ensure that such petitions are answered, but the cost is greater – it will set a player back two plot points to ensure the intervention of such a god.
